Unscrupulous Australian Taxi Drivers Charging Fixed Upfront Fees

Taxi drivers who have been charging fixed prices to customers on busy Saturday nights have been heavily attacked and legislators have asked for their licenses to be revoked.

The issue was highlighted during a busy Saturday evening on 17th November in Canberra when there was an unexpectedly high demand for taxis, Uber and public transport.

Numerous incidents came to be known during the Spilt Milk Festival held near Commonwealth Park, YesFest in Braddon and Anthem regions, whereby drivers were charging fixed prices in the range $50 to $150 at various times.

This caused many students and families problems and financial worries, who were told they would have to pay a $50 unmetered flat rate to get home after midnight on Saturday night.

Likewise, some Uber fares were in the region of $50 to $70.

Negotiated or fixed prices are allowed, but they must not be higher than flat metered fares.

Many passengers have requested that these drivers are caught and have their licences suspended and be fined. Complaints are handled by government agencies, whilst taxi agencies are pursuing impact on their licensing.
