School children injured on home journey in South Africa

A minibus taxi carrying twenty children home from school crashed into another vehicle on Friday 23rd January in Durban.

The children were taken to different hospitals in the area, and gained a range of minor-medium injuries. However, many children were stable at the scene of the accident by trained paramedics.

The accident occurred near Gate 8 of KwaZulu-Natal University.

There have been a number of incidents involving school children using public transport.

Earlier in May, there was another accident in which a minibus taxi overturned and a young teenager died, whilst twenty four others were injured in Sawoti, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

In another minibus taxi incident in March, four people died and three schoolchildren hospitalised, when it went off the road in Mtwalume.

It is important that health and safety review measures are undertaken for both the roads, drivers and vehicles.
