Minibus Taxi Driver kills three schoolchildren in fatal accident

Four school pupils were hit by a taxi driver on Dumisani Makhaye Drive in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday 6th March and three of them died. The fourth pupil was seriously injured and is receiving medical treatment.

The 33 year old taxi driver was arrested and charged with culpable homocide

The taxi driver apparently went through a red traffic light and hit the four children from Newlands East Secondary School who were crossing the road.

The driver who belongs to the Lindelani Taxi Association, initially fled the scene and will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court.

There were horrific and chaotic scenes played out in Newlands East in Durban after the three schoolgirls were killed, whose bodies were spread across the road near the Inanda arterial and the M21 highway.

The local community were enraged and shocked by this incident.

Taxis have a renowned reputation for breaking the rules and the laws. Further safety improvemnts within the area, and consultations are underway with the department of transport and schools.
